Description

Ongoing conflict in Sudan has left millions in need of humanitarian assistance. Overall, more than 5.2 million Sudanese are internally displaced. In Darfur, an estimated 4.2 million people are reliant on international assistance due to an ongoing conflict between government forces and rebel groups. More than 150 United Nations (UN) agencies and international nongovernmental organizations are managing more than 880 projects across Sudan to help to meet these needs. Ensuring that humanitarian activities are coordinated, complementary and respond to all urgent needs is therefore essential. With CIDA support, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is working to coordinate these humanitarian efforts throughout the country, with an aim of making them more effective, and ensuring that accepted humanitarian principles are upheld in the delivery of assistance. OCHA serves as a focal point for relations between UN and non-governmental agencies, between the humanitarian community and the various levels of government in Sudan, and between humanitarian actors and the Sudanese beneficiary community.
