Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). IFAD uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. IFAD’s mandate is to improve rural food and nutrition security, and enable rural women and men to overcome poverty. IFAD works with poor rural people to help them grow and sell more food, increase their incomes and determine the direction of their own lives. Canada’s support to IFAD contributes to innovative projects and programs and to deliver country-specific solutions, which involve increasing the rural poor’s access to agricultural technologies, financial services, markets, land and other natural resources.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of 2011 include: the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) funded approximately 240 projects in the rural areas in 94 countries, reaching 43.1 million clients, half of whom are women. The funding has contributed to the training of more than 4.5 million people to use improved agricultural practices and technologies, enabling them to increase productivity. About 18,000 kilometres of roads were built or repaired, connecting often-remote rural communities to services, markets and urban centres. More than 13,000 marketing groups were formed or strengthened, with 716,000 people trained in business and entrepreneurship. Some 2.1 million people were trained to sustainably manage common property resources, such as land, water and forests; and 5.5 million hectares of common-property land benefitted from improved management. Rural financial institutions supported by IFAD provided services to more than eight million savers and nearly five million borrowers, making it possible for them to invest in their farms and businesses, manage risk and plan for the future.
