Description

October 6, 2009 - On September 30, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Indonesia, 45 km west-northwest of Padang, Sumatra. On October 1st, a second earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred 155 km north-northwest of Bengkulu, Sumatra, and 225 km southeast of Padang. The quakes triggered landslides destroying at least four villages across the western coast of the island of Sumatra. CIDA's contribution allows the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in partnership with the Indonesia Red Cross Society, to assist up to 5,000 families (approximately 25,000 beneficiaries) for six months in disaster-affected areas through immediate relief distribution of non-food items, the provision of temporary emergency shelter, water and sanitation interventions, and health and medical supplies and services.
