Description

Throughout most of 2009, Jonglei State, in south eastern Sudan, has been the site of violent clashes between rival tribal groups, resulting in hundreds of deaths, mostly of women and children, and the displacement of tens of thousands of people. The general insecurity in the area has prevented much food aid from reaching displaced populations, now unable to meet their own nutritional needs. Malnutrition rates have been reported as high as 18-21% amongst children under five years old, well above the World Health Organisation emergency threshold of 15%. CIDA's support of Save the Children is helping it to deliver supplementary and therapeutic feeding programmes to an estimated 3,000 malnourished children in some of the worst affected counties of Jonglei State.
