Description

Armed conflict between Pakistani government forces and armed opposition groups has escalated across Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) since August 2008. Approximately 3 million people were displaced due to violence, of whom about 1.7 million have since returned to their home areas. Conflict and displacement continue in many parts of Pakistan, and both the returnees and the internally displaced people (IDPs) require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. CIDA's contribution is supporting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide timely and adequate shelter, protection, and camp management services for displaced and conflict-affected people. This contribution also supports UNHCR's work with the almost 1.7 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, many of whom have been living in the country for decades.
