Description

28 June 2011 - The Chadian food crisis in 2009-2010 has had a long-term impact on household assets and savings, and on the health and nutritional status of large segments of the population. Despite a favourable outlook for this year’s harvest, many are still facing severe food insecurity and will continue to need food assistance in the coming year. Furthermore, in addition to the almost 300,000 refugees from Sudan's Darfur region and the Central African Republic, an estimated 25,000 Chadians from Libya are now returning to Chad. These displaced groups are putting additional pressure on an already strained food supply thus increasing the need for assistance. Canada’s support to World Food Programme (WFP) in Chad aims to provide adequate emergency food supplies to 737,000 food insecure populations, thereby reducing hunger and malnutrition in these populations. Specific activities include: general food distribution, blanket supplementary feeding for children under 2 and pregnant and lactating women, and targeted supplementary feeding for moderately malnourished children under 5.
