Description

January 5, 2011 Pakistan recently experienced the worst monsoon flooding in its history. At its height, over 20 million people were affected, and over 7 million people were made homeless by the flooding. While most of the flood-affected people have returned to their home areas, approximately 14 million people still require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs, and to begin the process of resuming their normal lives. CIDA is supporting the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist the most vulnerable flood-affected populations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK) and Balochistan, including Afghan refugees, and to provide protection and camp management services throughout the flood-affected areas. Specific activities include: the provision of shelter and other relief supplies; ensuring that flood-affected people’s rights are respected during the floods response; and, providing training, management and coordination services to ensure that camps housing flood-affected displaced people meet minimum humanitarian standards.
