Description

January 17th 2011 - In 2008 and 2009, armed conflict in the Central Mindanao region of the Philippines led to the displacement of 700,000 persons and the death of approximately 500 people (soldiers and civilians). This conflict also led to the devastation of productive assets, livelihoods, houses and schools for a large portion of the population. As a result, this region is now facing an acute food crisis. Seventy percent of the internally displaced persons and returnee population are currently experiencing food insecurity. Extremely high levels of Global Acute Malnutrition among children between 6-24 months (22 percent) as well as among children under 5 years (9.6 percent) have been recorded. CIDA’s contribution is helping WFP meet the needs of the food insecure population of Central Mindanao. Under this operation, which runs from July 1st, 2010 to December 31st, 2011, activities include food support for internally displaced people, food-for-education, food-for-work, food-for- training and mother and child health and nutrition.
