Description

21 March 2011 - Bangladesh is host to approximately 228,000 Rohingya refugees who have fled their homes in Northern Rakhine State, Burma. These refugees (of whom approximately 28,000 are registered with the Government of Bangladesh, with the remaining 200,000 having no legal status) constitute one of the most protracted refugee situations in the world. Despite improvements in recent years, the living conditions of the refugees still do not meet minimum international standards. CIDA's contribution is supporting the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to meet the basic needs of the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. UNHCR is assisting in meeting the basic needs of the refugee population for education, health, nutrition and shelter, in anticipation of more durable solutions to their situation.
