Description

February 1, 2011 - The humanitarian situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a serious cause for concern. Clashes in the north and east of the country between armed forces, rebel groups and local militias continue to wreak severe harm on civilians, who are routinely caught in the frontlines of confrontations. North Kivu, South Kivu and Orientale Province in particular are plagued by serious human rights violations, food insecurity, high mortality and morbidity rates, sexual violence and considerable and ongoing displacement of population groups. With CIDA support, the World Food Programme (WFP) is addressing the food assistance needs of vulnerable populations in the DRC. Food distributions, nutrition assistance and livelihoods support activities focus on increasing the food consumption of displaced populations and host communities, reducing and stabilizing malnutrition levels to below critical thresholds, and restoring and protecting the livelihoods of conflict-affected communities.
