Description

21 March 2011 - On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale rocked Port-au-Prince, the capital of the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti. It is estimated that up to 3 million people have been affected by the disaster, many of whom require ongoing humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. This grant to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) supports 19 UN Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP) projects in Haiti that IOM implements primarily in the camp coordination and camp management (CCCM), emergency shelter, early recovery and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sectors. IOM is the coordinator for the CCCM cluster, a critical gap in the humanitarian response that is affecting the provision of life-saving assistance to populations who remain in camps. As cluster lead, IOM coordinates and provides support to camp management organizations and is developing minimum standards in CCCM in the context of urban camps in Port-au-Prince. Other IOM projects fill gaps such as the provision of emergency shelter to earthquake-affected people in camps or while they wait for a more permanent solution to their shelter needs. As part of their early recovery activities, IOM works to remove rubble in Port-au-Prince, and supports the return and relocation process through assisting Haitian authorities on the land tenure issue.
