Description

14 October 2011 – Torrential monsoon rains in August and September triggered extensive flooding in Sindh and Balochistan provinces, Pakistan. Based on an initial assessment of the situation, the United Nations estimates that approximately 5.8 million people have been affected by the floods, and about 1.8 million people have been displaced from their homes. The flood-affected population is in immediate need of food assistance, emergency shelter and household items, clean water and sanitation, basic health care, and, support for the prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition among children and pregnant/breastfeeding women. CIDA’s contribution is helping the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide emergency food assistance to 2.55 million flood-affected people. In addition, WFP is providing supplementary food and high energy biscuits to children and pregnant/lactating women in order to prevent and treat moderate acute malnutrition in these highly vulnerable populations.
