Description

March 2013 - With Canada's support, Médecins du Monde is improving access to cholera prevention and treatment services for more than 146,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance in Cité Soleil, an area lacking in many basic services, including emergency health, safe water and sanitation. The 2010 earthquake and the influx of internally-displaced persons, followed by the cholera outbreak and the passage of Hurricanes Isaac and Sandy with an increase in cholera cases has increased the need for humanitarian assistance in Cité Soleil, particularly in the health sector. Project activities include: supporting and managing 13 oral rehydration posts and one cholera treatment centre; providing training to 60 health centre workers and 34 community health workers on cholera prevention and treatment; and setting up a cholera prevention community alert system for four camps for internally-displaced persons and 13 districts, benefitting146,513 people.

Expected results

Expected outputs include: 13 oral rehydration posts and one cholera treatment centre supported and managed; 60 health centre workers and 34 community health workers trained on cholera prevention and treatment; and a cholera prevention community alert system is set up for four camps for internally displaced persons and 13 districts in Cité Soleil, directly benefitting 146,513 people. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people, especially women and children.
