Description

This project aims to continue educational support for student-teachers and primary students from the four teacher training colleges and 61 primary schools in the districts already supported under the Better Education through Teacher Training and Empowerment (BETTER) project through online and offline options during the COVID-19 pandemic. Project activities include: (1) disseminating information on the prevention of the coronavirus (COVID-19) through media such as radio, social media, posters and sound trucks; and (2) supporting students’ return to school upon reopening by engaging communities through school council mobilization, radio, and sound truck and megaphone messages.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved quality of teacher training programs at the four partner teacher training colleges in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado, Tete, Maputo and Niassa provinces; (2) improved student-centred and gender-sensitive teaching pedagogy and methodologies used by student-teachers and graduates from the four teacher training colleges in Cabo Delgado, Tete, Maputo and Niassa provinces; and (3) improved student-centred and gender-sensitive management and supervision at partner primary schools in Cabo Delgado, Tete, Maputo and Niassa provinces.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2021 include: (1) supported distance learning education through BETTER, an online platform created by the project to enable teaching during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic at teacher colleges nationwide, and primary and secondary schools; (2) created and broadcast educational radio programs for children six to eight years old to support their literacy and speaking skills in Portuguese; and (3) developed and disseminated radio programs in Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces, promoting COVID-19 prevention, educational activities for children at home, mental health and support, and domestic violence helplines.
