This portion of the larger project works to respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Activities include: (1) develop and disseminate information through text messaging, social media, radios and home visits on hygiene, infection prevention, COVID-19, maternal, neonatal, sexual health and prevention of sexual gender based violence; (2) provide gender responsive and safe transportation services and reimbursable transportation vouchers for poor and vulnerable women and adolescents for reproductive, neonatal, sexual health emergencies and confirmed cases of COVID-19; and (3) Train Quality Improvement Teams and Ward Development Committees on gender responsive COVID-19 response.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved equitable access to maternal and newborn services and enhanced health outcomes of 760,000 women of child-bearing age, 430,000 newborns, and 600,000 fathers and potential fathers; (2) increased knowledge of women, men and community leaders on maternal and newborn health; (3) community health workers trained in gender-responsive planning, service provision and referrals; (4) improved availability of medicines and supplies; and (5) strengthened capacity of health governance/oversight groups to ensure sustainability.

Results achieved as of the end of the project (November 2021 ) include: (1) 347,579 people (of whom 62% are women) reached with sexual and gender-based violence and COVID-19 related messaging; (2) 82,806 home visits conducted and 3,607 courtyard and peer outreach sessions on sexual, maternal and reproductive health and COVID-19; (3) 3,809 health workers (of whom 82% are women) trained on COVID-19 screening, referral, risk communication and sexual and gender base violence (SGBV) detection and referral; and (4) free transportation services provided to 4,659 clients (of whom 71% are women) for COVID-19 (testing and vaccination), maternal and newborn health and sexual reproductive health and rights services (deliveries, family planning, antennal care).
