Description

This project is part of Canada’s Women’s Voice and Leadership Program, which supports local and regional women’s organisations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights, and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting activities, building institutional capacity, and promoting network and alliance-building as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change. The Program also responds to the globally recognized, significant gap in funding and support to women’s rights organizations and movements around the world. This project is implemented by Oxfam-Québec and supports women's rights organizations in Tunisia. It's objective is to strengthen the capacity of local women's rights organizations across the country. It also aims to support their activities that seek to: (1) empower women and girls; (2) preserve their rights; and (3) achieve gender equality in their society. More than 130 organizations and institutions are supported by this project. The project directly involves more than 15,000 people, at least 60% of whom are women. In addition, the project works with 500 women and youth to strengthen their leadership skills and capacities to promote women's rights. The project aims to reach at least 30% of young people aged between 15 and 30 years of the Tunisian population, through the organizations supported and the activities implemented by this project.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved management and sustainability of [local or regional] women’s rights organizations in Tunisia; (2) enhanced performance of women’s rights organizations’ programming and advocacy to advance gender equality and empower women and girls; and (3) increased effectiveness of sub-national and national (or regional) women’s rights platforms, networks and alliances to affect policy, legal and social change in Tunisia.

Results achieved

Among the results achieved up to March 2024: 1) supported 9 women's rights organizations (WROs) in the implementation of their program activities, including training in project development, financing, gender mainstreaming, public policy analysis and policy paper writing, and strategic communication; 2) 9 WROs have strengthened their capacity to implement quality programs for the groups they work with, through technical and financial support; 3) set up a legal clinic for women, offering them a range of activities including intake, dissemination, analysis, accompaniment and awareness-raising. This also involves listening carefully to women's own understanding of the legal system; 4) created several feminist university radio stations to give a voice to students and academics committed to promoting gender equality and women's rights, within Tunisian educational institutions; 5) carried out action research on “Measuring the impact of feminist clubs and spaces in promoting a culture of equality: good practices and constraints”. The aim of this research was to share the reflections and analyses carried out with partners in order to pool efforts and better respond to the needs of women living with gender-related issues, and to better spread the culture of equality; 6) set up a “Safia Farhat Feminist History and Documentation Centre” to maintain an archive of 33 years of history, including an audiovisual unit for recording and preserving oral testimonies; 7) organized a mock tribunal on feminicide, “Les féminicides devant les assises,” to highlight the challenges faced by victims and women's rights advocates, and to develop advocacy for legislative and policy measures to prevent feminicide.
