Description

This project supports the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) Evaluation Office in conducting an evaluation of its response to the Syria crisis. UNFPA is a significant humanitarian partner for Canada in the area of sexual and reproductive health rights in emergencies. The evaluation findings are expected to provide useful lessons learned for future UNFPA humanitarian operations. Canada renewed its engagement in the Middle East with an $840 million commitment over three years (2016-2019) to provide humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable people affected by the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Iraq and neighbouring countries. Assistance valued at $65.5 million from this commitment is being delivered through UNFPA to provide reproductive health services that integrate gender-based violence prevention and response for crisis-affected populations in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) an independent comprehensive assessment of the UNFPA overall response to the Syria crisis including, in particular, its contribution to the “Whole of Syria” approach; and (2) lessons learned from UNFPA past and current Syrian humanitarian crisis responses and recommendations for future interventions both in the sub-region and elsewhere.
