Description

March 2018 - Niger continues to face significant humanitarian challenges related to food insecurity, malnutrition, and forced displacement. The expansion of the conflict in Nigeria has led to more than 400,000 people in need and the highest levels of food insecurity in the country. It is expected that humanitarian needs remain high in Niger’s Diffa region throughout 2018. With GAC’s support, Development and Peace and its partners are addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 48,330 people in the Diffa region. Project activities include: (1) constructing sanitary facilities that accommodate the unique needs of women and men, benefiting up to 12,000 people; (2) distributing feminine kits, benefiting up to 3,000 women and adolescent girls; (3) distributing materials necessary for construction or repair of shelters, benefiting up to 21,000 people; and (4) providing cash-for-work and cash grants activities, benefiting up to 10,500 people.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to water, sanitation and hygiene interventions; (2) increased access to safe and adequate shelters; and (3) increased access to means to meet basic needs. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
