Description

This project aims to strengthen the implementation and universalization of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) and the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM). Project activities include: (1) facilitating bilateral advocacy with target states for the universalization of the conventions; (2) providing small grants to national grassroots organizations, including women and youth-led organizations, to increase their capacity to promote the conventions and their norms; (3) supporting civil society representatives and members of affected communities to influence decision-making; and (4) supporting civil society members from affected communities, including victims, to participate in APMBC and CCM meetings.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved ability of States Parties and civil society to defend the norms against land mine and cluster munition use, and to promote the universalization of the conventions; (2) increased application of sound practices, including for land release methodologies, to help fulfill national clearance obligations; (3) increased meaningful participation of survivors and affected communities (including women, men, girls and boys) in implementing the conventions at the national and international levels.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2022) include: (1) issued 92 small grants (average value of USD 4,900) to local organizations supporting advocacy on the implementation and universalization of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) and the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM); (2) organized awareness-raising meetings alongside the Meetings of States Parties for the APMBC and CCM. The meetings provided 80 young people from 24 countries the opportunity to strengthen their advocacy knowledge and skills; (3) supported seven countries (Gambia, Maldives, Nigeria, Niue, Philippines, Saint Lucia, and Sao Tome and Principe) in ratifying or acceding to the CCM; and (4) published four annual editions of the “Cluster Munitions Monitor” and the “Landmine Monitor”.
