Description 

This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to UNRWA. UNRWA uses these funds, along with other donors’ funding, to achieve its mandate of provision of basic education, health, and social safety net services to over 5 million vulnerable Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon, who are among the poorest and most vulnerable.

Expected results 

The expected outcomes as stated by UNRWA include: (1) refugees' rights under international law are protected and promoted; (2) refugees' health is protected and the disease burden is reduced; (3) school-aged children complete quality, equitable and inclusive basic education; (4) refugee capabilities strengthened for increased livelihood opportunities; and (5) refugees are able to meet their essential human needs of food, shelter and environmental health.

Results achieved 

Results achieved as of 2023: UNRWA provided 7,869,919 primary health care consultations to 2,053,032 patients, education to 544,710 children during the 2021/22 academic year, social safety net (SSN) assistance, including cash and food, to 325,180 persons, Technical and Vocational Education and Training to 7,930 youth and microfinance loans to 32,517 clients. Protection services were extended across all fields of Agency operation, emphasizing advocacy, mainstreaming protection standards in and through service delivery and providing psychosocial support and case management services to 4,291 refugees who faced critical protection risks.
