This project aims to foster local women’s active and meaningful participation in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lebanon and Nigeria, in the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, including peace processes and peacebuilding. This project ensures that long-term peace and stability improvements are maintained, and creates a better response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the four countries. Project activities include: (1) identifying and mapping key stakeholders, including local women, women’s organizations, civil society organizations and local leaders; and (2) providing workshops, media training, and lessons learned documents on local women’s active and meaningful participation in the implementation of UNSCR 1325, including in peace processes and peacebuilding.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased local women’s active and meaningful participation in Colombia, DRC, Lebanon, and Nigeria in the implementation of UNSCR 1325, peace processes and peacebuilding; (2) enhanced coordination between local women’s organizations, civil society organizations, media, and local authorities, to support policies and legislation to implement UNSCR 1325 and National Action Plans at the local level; (3) enhanced integration of gender-responsive laws and practices and strategies to respond to COVID-19; and (4) strengthened knowledge, awareness and strategies of local women and women’s organizations in the implementation of UNSCR 1325.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) held crisis risk and communication strategy workshops with local partners in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lebanon; (2) provided a two-day workshop on the localization of Lebanon’s National Action Plan (NAP) to 35 participants, including local government officials; (3) held two localizations workshops in Nigeria with local partners, training over 90 participants from two local government areas, focusing on coordinating a multi-sectoral implementation of the Nigerian NAP and drafting its Local Action Plans; (4) held a series of training of trainers in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Lebanon focused on Youth, Peace and Security. These are preliminary trainings, followed by additional ones later in the project; and (5) 15 participants in Colombia and 22 in Lebanon (journalists and media practitioners) received media and Women, Peace and Security training.
