Description

This project aims to enhance inclusive growth and develop urban areas in Ethiopia. It supports the Government of Ethiopia's efforts to improve the income of targeted poor households and establish an urban safety net mechanism. The project seeks to reduce poverty and vulnerability among the urban poor living below the poverty line over 10 years. It also aims to expand the previous urban work completed by the first original urban project, which ended in 2020, by implementing the project in more cities. The project aims to benefit 1.7 million people (60% women) in impoverished urban areas, including internally displaced people and refugees, by improving incomes in urban centers across Ethiopia.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved urban safety net (a regular cash grant) for urban impoverished women and men in up to 88 cities; (2) increased opportunities for paid work on public works projects and livelihood support for poor urban women, men and disadvantaged youth; (3) improved job creation and services for youth; and (4) increased women’s voice, agency and economic empowerment.
