Project profile — Nutrition, Health and WASH Response to conflict-affected people in Taiz - 2021-2023

March 2021 - Yemen currently faces the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with over 24 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The conflict and collapsing economy have pushed over 16 million people to suffer from acute food insecurity, and over 3.6 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the crisis in 2015. Essential service provision has collapsed, including critical water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and health services, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera, dengue fever and diphtheria. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of access to essential services and face an increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) due to the crisis. With GAC’s support, this project provides a multi-sectoral response targeting an estimated 137,810 people in the Taiz governorate. Project activities include: (1) screening, referring and treating girls and boys under the age of 5 years suffering from acute malnutrition; (2) providing awareness sessions on gender equality, gender-based violence and available services; (3) distributing gender-responsive hygiene kits; and (4) improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved nutritional status among girls and boys; (2) increased access to integrated, gender-responsive primary health care, sexual and reproductive health, and SGBV services for vulnerable women, girls, men and boys; and (3) improved access to safe, dignified and gender-responsive water and sanitation services and facilities. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
