Description

March 2021 - The Grand Sud region of Madagascar faces a severe food security and nutrition crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation by driving up the price of essential products and restricting inter-regional travel negatively impacting livelihoods and reducing overall household income. An estimated 1.14 million people in the Grand Sud region and 203,453 people in the Southeast of the country require humanitarian assistance from January to April 2021. With GAC’s support and other donors, the World Food Programme (WFP) provides additional food assistance to more than 891,000 crisis-affected people until June 2021, the end of the lean season. Project activities include: (1) distributing emergency food assistance through cash-based transfers; (2) treating moderate and acute malnutrition for children under the age of five, including pregnant and lactating women; (3) launching emergency school feeding programs in the country.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to food assistance for crisis-affected populations; (2) increased access to supplementary feeding for children under the age of five; and (3) increased enrolment and school attendance. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated, and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
