Description

June 2021 – Conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region has created one of the most intense humanitarian crises in the world, characterized by extreme levels of acute food insecurity, significant population displacement, and reports of widespread human rights abuses. An estimated 5.2 million people, or 90% of the regional population, require humanitarian assistance, including more than 350,000 facing famine conditions. With GAC support, World Food Program is addressing acute food insecurity in Tigray. Project activities include: (1) providing general distribution of cash or in-kind food rations to food insecure households; (2) providing supplementary therapeutic food assistance to prevent acute malnutrition; and (3) providing transportation and logistical support to the humanitarian response in Tigray.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved food security; (2) reduced levels of acute malnutrition amongst conflict-affected households; and (3) improved humanitarian access to populations in need throughout Tigray. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated, and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
