Description

This project aims to enhance the integration of Venezuelan refugee and migrant children, especially girls, and children that face marginalization and/or vulnerability in targeted host communities into the education systems of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Project activities include: (1) providing catch up, remedial and flexible learning programmes for out of school children and children who are behind their learning due to school closures to help increase their access to quality learning opportunities; (2) providing mentoring actions for school directors and pedagogical, gender-responsive education training for teachers; (3) providing children, especially girls, with learning equipment (such as connectivity) for continuity of online education at home; and (4) providing psychosocial and pedagogical support to children and adolescents upon reintegration and continuity in the education system. The project seeks to directly benefit Venezuelan refugee and migrant children and vulnerable host community children, especially girls, and teachers, other education personnel, and authorities from the Ministries of Education in each country. Parents and caregivers of the direct beneficiaries will also benefit from the implementation of the project’s activities.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased provision of protective education services to Venezuelan refugee and migrant children and host community children, especially girls; and (2) improved implementation of regional evidence based normative frameworks through policy dialogues and exchange of experiences to deliver gender-responsive education services.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of December 2022 include: (1) provided non-formal or complementary learning activities for Venezuelan refugees and migrants, engaging 1,194 participants (51% girls and adolescent girls) in Colombia, 157 participants (46% girls and adolescent girls) in Ecuador and 125 participants (50% girls and adolescent girls) in Peru; (2) provided support to improve learning spaces in 21 schools in Ecuador and 28 schools in Peru to foster better learning environments, enhancing the overall educational experience for students; (3) provided school kits to 939 Venezuelan refugees and migrants (48% girls and adolescent girls) in Ecuador and 80 Venezuelan refugees and migrants (54% girls and adolescent girls) in Peru. This includes learning materials, uniforms, support for internet connectivity, cash vouchers for transportation and menstrual and hygiene kits for women; (4) offered comprehensive support and training to 331 educational personnel, including teachers (75% women) in Ecuador and 3,300 (73% women) in Peru, to enhance their skills and access specialized tools; (5) provided mental health and psychosocial support services to 1,046 crisis-affected refugees, migrants and host community children and adolescents (47% girls and adolescent girls) in Ecuador. This includes individual and group accompaniment, focusing on psycho-pedagogical support, extracurricular activities, and ensuring access to their rights; and (6) provided specialized protection services for cases involving any form of violence, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, gender-based violence and bullying. In Ecuador, 263 children and adolescents (33% girls and adolescent girls) and in Peru 40 children and adolescents (45% girls and adolescent girls) were referred to specialized services for assistance.
