Description

August 2021 – On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred 13 kilometres southeast of Petit-Trou-de-Nippes in Haiti. The earthquake caused severe damage to infrastructure, affecting approximately 800,000 people living along the coast of Haiti’s southern peninsula, particularly in the departments of Grand’Anse, Nippes and Sud. Haiti’s Prime Minister declared a state of emergency in the country and the Government of Haiti requested international assistance. An effective and timely humanitarian assistance response is essential to address the immediate life-saving needs of disaster-affected people. In order to respond to this crisis, Global Affairs Canada launched the Haiti Earthquake Matching Fund in partnership with the Humanitarian Coalition and its members. Through this mechanism, the Government of Canada is matching the eligible donations made to the Humanitarian Coalition and its members, up to $2 million. The funds are used by Humanitarian Coalition members to deliver life-saving assistance to those most in need. Project activities include: (1) addressing food security and nutrition needs; (2) distributing shelter and hygiene materials and other non-food items; and (3) providing health, psychosocial support and protection services to affected communities.

Expected results

The expected outcome for this project is improved equitable access to food, health care, non-food items, protection, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, and other basic needs for vulnerable girls, boys, women and men affected by the earthquake. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in communities experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
