Description

This project, managed by the Stop TB Partnership housed within the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), contributes to global efforts to end tuberculosis (TB) by stimulating, supporting, and demonstrating novel and innovative approaches. These approaches focus on expanding early detection of TB, accessing quality treatment, and improving TB treatment outcomes in poor and vulnerable populations with limited access to health care in developing countries. Selected initiatives with potential for scale-up receive fast-track, short-term funding from TB REACH to demonstrate effectiveness and produce the necessary evidence to integrate and scale-up within National Strategic Plans. It also provides funding applications to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This Fund is the largest international donor for TB programming. Stop TB focuses on providing support for documentation and ensures the dissemination of successful approaches and lessons learned.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved TB case detection and care services, including expanded TB Prevention Treatment (TPT), especially for vulnerable and high-risk communities. This includes women and children through funding new or innovative projects that deliver gender and environmentally sensitive approaches to TB detection and diagnosis and integrated disease screening; and (2) increased adoption and scale-up successful innovative programming approaches for TB case detection and care services under an integrated approach with COVID-19 response activities. This includes strengthening a country’s National Strategic Plans and providing monitoring and evaluation (M&E) guidance and tools to project implementers via grantee meetings, site visits and M&E quarterly reviews.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of June 2024: (1) notified 52,573 people with TB of their diagnosis. Confirmed 29,535 of them through microbiological detection; (2) provided TB care services to 15,950 people and saw successful treatment outcomes; (3) 68% of initiatives supported identified more TB cases during the implementation period compared to the baseline period; (4) 71% of initiatives supported that focused on TB preventive treatment (TPT) started more people on TPT compared to the baseline period; (5) 15% of initiatives supported reported an innovation that is being scaled up or replicated through funding from other sources; (6) 7 initiatives supported targeting women, children, and other key populations in particular expanded and incorporated by other donors; (7) several initiatives supported secured external funding of $5.42 million to further expand their activities. Overall, this TB REACH Wave 10 project is exceeding or making significant progress on many of its Key Performance Indicators and intermediate outcomes.
