Description

This project aims to deliver specialized renewable energy capacity-building to Indigenous Communities in Colombia and Ecuador to empower them to address their needs, drive sustainable change, and participate in the clean energy transition. The project seeks to support community-led approaches for adopting clean energy and energy-efficient solutions for Indigenous Peoples to actualize climate change mitigation in Colombia and Ecuador. It also seeks to decrease barriers for Indigenous Peoples to access and benefit from clean energy capacity-building programs. Through accessible and inclusive clean energy needs assessments and policy recommendations by, for, and with Indigenous Nations in Colombia and Ecuador, the project enables the adoption of more equitable practices leading to Indigenous-led clean energy solutions.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced adoption of clean energy and energy-efficient solutions for Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, all genders, and all generations to actualize nature-positive climate change mitigation in Latin America; and (2) decreased barriers for Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, all genders, and all generations in Latin America to access and benefit from clean energy capacity building programs.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of April 2025 include: (1) selected and established partnerships with 2 local Indigenous organizations, Glocal Grassroots Movement of Movements in Colombia and Amawtay Wasi University in Ecuador to implement the project; (2) co-developed and delivered an 8-month Indigenous clean energy, climate mitigation and adaptation capacity-building program; (3) delivered the program to 30 Indigenous participants from 5 regions across Colombia. As a result, community teams from each region developed and completed pre-feasibility studies for clean energy projects in their regions; and (4) developed and delivered a workshop to 42 Indigenous youth in Ecuador about clean energy, climate mitigation and adaption.
