Description

The project helps promote social cohesion in Jordan through conflict prevention and resolution, thereby reducing social tensions and radicalization and promoting stability. As both agents of change and victims of conflict, women play a critical role in addressing its root causes. Canada supported the 2018-22 Jordan National Action Plan (JONAP) for Women, Peace and Security, which increased women’s representation in the security sectors and access to services for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This second phase for JONAP (2022-2025) addresses remaining barriers to women’s participation across the security, military, diplomatic and justice sectors and empowers grassroots women’s organizations to effectively respond to crises and GBV.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) enhanced women's active participation in the Jordanian security, military, diplomatic and justice sectors, as well as in crisis prevention and response; and (2) increased GBV prevention, discrimination and violent extremism by engaging with women’s organizations, schools, media, religious/community leaders, and youth.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of December 2024 include: (1) endorsed the Jordanian National Action Plan’s governance structure and the terms of reference for the national coalition members responsible for implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. This new structure seeks to help ensure accountability and foster ownership of the plan’s implementation, setting the foundation for effective coordination and implementation; (2) supported the National Center for Security and Crisis Management (NCSCM) to conduct a gender audit, which identified barriers to women’s participation in crisis response and informed NCSCM’s first gender mainstreaming policy’s creation; (3) provided services to nearly 3,500 women and girl survivors of violence through close collaboration with the Jordanian Women’s Union and the Arab Women Organization, marking a 15% increase in use compared to the previous year. Also, forged a partnership with the Syrian Refugee Affairs Directorate to reach out to Syrian women refugees to offer similar services; (4) established a partnership with Madrasati, a local non-governmental organization, in 15 public schools, positively changing the perceptions and attitudes of 1,500 young men and women toward gender equality; and (5) revised 69 new curriculums to include gender sensitive language and address gender stereotypes, reaching 2,303,274 students.
