Description

This project provides subject-matter experts from the Department of Justice to increase nuclear and radiological security globally. Project activity includes providing expert guidance to multilateral workshops and exercises focussed on strengthening national legislative frameworks. These frameworks are required under various nuclear and radiological security treaties.

Expected results

The expected outcome for this project includes increased knowledge—of participants and other stakeholders—of international best practices in developing national legislative frameworks to prevent, detect and respond to acts of nuclear terrorism.

Results achieved

Result achieved as of the end of the project (March 2023) includes the participation of subject-matter experts from the Department of Justice in two international events organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency: a five-day review conference for the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (ACPPNM)—held in March 2022 in Vienna, Austria—and a four-day regional meeting—held in October 2022 in Hanoi, Vietnam—to promote the universalization of the ACPPNM.
