Description

This project intends to provide health services to poor and vulnerable women and men, including refugees and displaced persons residing in Egypt, in the Governorates of Gharbia, Monofiya, North Sinai, Aswan and Giza. This project aims to procure, deliver and install three CT scanners to three public hospitals in Egypt serving the lower to lower-middle income population, which include (1) Kafr El Zayat General Hospital (Gharbia Governorate); (2) Monofia General Hospital (Monofiya Governorate); and( 3) Imbaba General Hospital (Giza Governorate). Also, the project seeks to procure, deliver and install 5 X-ray machines in 5 public hospitals in Egypt, which include: (1) Alsadaka general hospital (Aswan Governorate); (2) Edfo general hospital (Aswan Governorate); (3) Al-Areesh general hospital (North Sinai Governorate); (4) Beer Al-Abd district hospital (North Sinai Governorate); and (5) Al-Sheikh Zowayed district hospital (North Sinai Governorate). The X-rays will increase the Egyptian healthcare system’s capacity to provide health and diagnostic services to marginalized populations, particularly those suffering from COVID-19, women, refugees and displaced persons, residing in regions impacted by the pandemic and the conflicts in Sudan and Gaza.

Expected results

The expected results of this project include: 1) building resilience to health-related crises and shocks in order to safeguard development gains in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2) increase screening services in public hospitals serving the poorest and most affected population of Gharbia, Monofiya, North Sinai, Aswan and Giza.

Results achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (July 2024) include: (1) procured and installed 3 scanners in 3 busy hospitals that care for the poorest and most underserved populations in Giza, Kafr El Zayat and Monofia. Between March 2023 and December 2024, around 30,000 patients benefited from these newly installed machines; (2) procured and installed 5 mobile digital X-ray machines with advanced technology, introduced for the first time in Egypt. Installed machines in intensive care units of high-density hospitals, contributing to saving around 3,000 patients’ lives since their installation; and (3) contributed to strengthening Egypt’s health care system by enhancing national capacity for screening, diagnosis and treatment in response to health crises such as the COVID-19 outbreak.
