Description 

This grant represents Canada’s long term institutional support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). UNRWA uses these funds and other donors' funds to achieve its mandate, which is to provide state-like essential services to 5.9M Palestinian refugees in 4 host countries – Palestine (West Bank and Gaza), Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. These essential services include primary and secondary education, primary health care, aid to livelihoods, protection, infrastructure and camp improvement, and waste management services.

Expected results 

The expected outcomes as stated by UNRWA, include: (1) delivered quality basic education and (2) provided health and social services to millions of vulnerable Palestinian refugees, including women, children, and people with disabilities.

Results achieved 

Results achieved as of December 2024 include: (1) provided primary health care to over 1,163,500 patients; (2) provided education to 241,785 children during the 2023 -24 academic year; (3) provided social safety net assistance, including cash and food, to 334,114 persons; (4) provided technical and vocational education and training to 5,515 youth and; (5) provided microfinance loans to 22,677 clients; (6) rehabilitated or built 920 shelters; and (7) provided support to 14,026 refugee clients facing critical protection risks, with protection services (psychosocial support and social assistance) being expanded to all areas of intervention.
