Description

This project aims to support the sustainable conservation of protected areas for bird species by local communities, specifically women, Indigenous Peoples, and Afro-descendants in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Peru. Protected areas are a proven nature-based solution for safeguarding biodiversity, building resilience to climate change, improving food and water security, and driving local economic success for surrounding communities. When created in collaboration with nearby communities, local economies stand to benefit from protected areas, as many protected areas are hotspots for ecotourism, bringing in new revenue that directly benefits communities.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) strengthened community-led conservation practices by local communities, especially women, Indigenous and Afro-descendant groups, in priority areas for bird conservation in selected countries in (Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC); (2) reduced barriers to equitable decision-making for conservation ecosystem actors, especially women, Indigenous and Afro-descendant groups, in favour of community-led conservation in LAC; and (3) increased collaboration between communities, especially Indigenous communities, along Flyways of migratory birds breeding in Canada and overwintering in LAC.
