Description

This project aims to contribute to the achievement of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets in Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. This is done by improving the management of protected areas, securing additional financing for ecological conservation, and enhancing the livelihoods of 182,000 people in vulnerable communities in the Great Limpopo transfrontier conservation area. As part of Canada’s international biodiversity program, this project aims to support efforts to reduce biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems in 3 national parks in Mozambique (Limpopo National Park), South Africa (Kruger National Park), and Zimbabwe (Gonarezhou National Park). It seeks to support expanding economic opportunities for communities, such as women, youth and small-business owners, along the Great Limpopo transfrontier conservation area. Also, the project aims to contribute to efforts to leverage $40 million in private capital for protected area development and biodiversity conservation.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved the management of 4.8 million hectares of critical habitat and ecological corridors for threatened species; (2) increased private investment in habitat conservation for threatened specials in the Great Limpopo Trans Frontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA); and (3) improved livelihoods and equitable access to and control over natural resources by women in the GLTFCA.
