Description

December 2024 – The humanitarian impact of the conflict in northern Ethiopia from 2020 to 2022 continues to be felt. The Amhara region, particularly along its border with Tigray, experienced a significant breakdown in security that is still fueling unrest. Ongoing conflict between federal forces and local militias has disrupted lives and livelihoods, displacing large numbers of people from their homes. With GAC’s support, Canadian Lutheran World Relief helps provide a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to meet critical needs in northern Amhara and southern Tigray. Project activities include: (1) restoring water points and sanitation facilities; (2) providing shelter and non-food items to displaced households; and (3) supporting protection services to mitigate the increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) for vulnerable women and girls.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved access to safe water and sanitation; (2) improved access to shelter and basic household items; and (3) increased awareness and reduced incidence of SGBV in crisis-affected and displaced communities. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated, and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
