Description

January 2025 - The rapid escalation of conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) triggered mass displacement within DRC and across borders. In 2025, over 77,000 people fled DRC to neighbouring countries, with the majority fleeing since mid-February. As the crisis continues to escalate, the number of people displaced is likely to continue rising. In response to the fast-growing number people displaced by this violence, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) appealed for US$ 40.4 million, increasing its capacity to reach up to 533,000 people by the end of April 2025. With GAC’s support, UNHCR helps enhance access to safe and dignified reception, registration and transit of new arrivals. Also, it helps increase multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance for new arrivals from DRC in Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Project activities include: (1) receiving, registering and transporting new arrivals; (2) providing protection services; (3) providing emergency shelter and non-food items; and (4) supporting access to basic needs, including clean water, sanitation and hygiene services, health and nutrition.

Expected results

The expected outcome of this project is enhanced access to multi-sectoral assistance and services for newly displaced people. The expected ultimate outcome is to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintained human dignity in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
