The program is supporting sister associations in four countries in order to strengthen their organizational capacities. This allows them to better contribute to nationally owned efforts to enhance care for safe motherhood, newborn health and the prevention of HIV/AIDS. The beneficiaries of the program are: (i) the professional associations and their members in targeted countries; (ii) ministries of health and other stakeholders such as national and international organizations involved in safe motherhood, newborn health and prevention of HIV/AIDS; (iii) health professionals and administrators who participate in training programs offered by the local professional associations with the support of the SOGC; and (iv) women of reproductive age and newborn children.

Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2012) include: The obstetricians and gynaecologists' associations of Burkina Faso (SOGOB), Guatemala (AGOG), Haiti (SHOG), and Uganda (AOGU) increased their contribution to national efforts to improve maternal and newborn health. All partners increased their organizational and technical capacities, enhanced their credibility, and diversified their portfolio of projects and activities in support of maternal and newborn health. Specific results by country include: In Burkina Faso, SOGOB established a national team of trainers with expertise in emergency obstetrical care and contributed to upgrading the emergency obstetrical care skills of more than 164 health professionals practicing in public institutions. In Guatemala, AGOG offered 33 ALARM (Advances in Labour and Risk Management) International Program training sessions to approximately 1,000 health professionals practicing in public institutions in regions with high levels of maternal and newborn deaths. It also contributed to raising awareness of more than 100 high school and college teachers and 1,050 students on the issue of HIV/AIDS. Benefits to mothers and their newborns include: In Haiti, SHOG established a maternity unit with emergency obstetrical care capabilities at the Croix-des-Bouquets Health Center. The unit provided prenatal and postnatal care services to 22,966 women and skilled care at delivery to 6,055 women and their newborns. Similarly, in Uganda, AOGU contributed to the provision of skilled care at delivery to more than 24,200 women and their newborns and the provision of emergency obstetrical care to 3,911 women.
