Description

This program aims to help poor households to improve their education and increase their income and assets by working through cooperatives, thereby enhancing their quality of life. The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and its international partners are committed to developing gender-equitable opportunities and empowering poor women and men through the development of sustainable member-owned institutions that serve as a conduit for communities to develop themselves. The program is built on three principles: (1) ensuring holistic development by promoting sustainable livelihoods, (2) concentrating on cooperatives as key transformative structures for development, and (3) developing gender-equitable opportunities and empowerment within communities as a strategy for poverty reduction. CIDA has provided $437,920 in additional support to this program for activities in Africa.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2011 include: 112,250 jobs created, including 68,018 jobs for women and 44,235 for men. Jobs ranged from working in the field of processing vegetables, to worker-owned factories, credit unions and new small businesses of all kinds. Many of the jobs reported were a direct result of loans that were issued to small business that hired employees. 415,083 men and 291,417 women increased access including productive machinery, facilities for business and financial transactions, computers, and community well-being facilities. Access to assets provides communities with the opportunity to leverage their efforts to grow their initiatives to scale and ultimately reduce vulnerability to poverty. These have contributed to increased gender-equitable opportunities to improve the sustainable livelihoods of poor households through co-operatives. Other results include: $3 million generated in new income for women and men, 62% of which was realized by women. This income was generated through diversified income generation activities, and better access to markets through co-operatives. $141,044,825 of savings mobilized by strengthening credit unions, 60% of which was saved by women. These have contributed to increased gender-equitable empowerment to improve the sustainable livelihoods of members of poor households through co-operatives.
