Description 

This project is part of CIDA's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.

Results achieved 

Results as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (i) 60 interns gained experience as project managers and trainers, spending one-, two-, and three-week stints in the field; (ii) 3,200 female and male youth were engaged in local projects; (iii) 468 female and male youth were involved in business and skill-building training; and (iv) 250 female and male youth took leadership roles in their communities. For example, in Dar es Salaam, 30 interns (i) produced a park design, a neighbourhood development plan and a needs assessment around public space for an impoverished area in the city, using participatory methods with an emphasis on youth; and (ii) helped to build and launch an information website for tourists, providing professional tourism knowledge and building the capacity of partners to promote Dar es Salaam as a tourist destination.
