The Students for Development 2010-2014 (SFD) program aims to provide Canadian and developing-country senior level university students with work experience that complements their fields of study and career goals, while increasing their knowledge of international development issues. In addition, innovative networking activities are developed between the Northern and Southern partners and interns. Those activities enable participants to share information and perspectives on international issues. SFD also aims to inform and engage the Canadian public.

The 2010-2015 SFD Program planned to mobilize 1,115 Canadian students and 80 developing-country university students and to fund 32 networking activities. Due to fiscal constraints, AUCC’s SFD Program was shortened to a period of four years (2011-2014), with a 30% reduction of the initial DFATD contribution. The total number of Canadian and International student internships was of approximately 800 Canadian students and 90 international students internships, through 55 projects and 218 individual internships involving 56 Canadian universities and 280 partners in 26 countries. The Program also funded close to 30 networking initiatives. Results at the end of the program (March 2014) include: - 56 Canadian universities and 280 partner organizations in 26 countries participated in the program. - 783 Canadian students (73% women / 27% men) completed internships (565 via projects and 218 via the individual mechanism). - 93 international students (52% women / 48% men) completed internships in Canada. - 28 international networking initiatives were undertaken involving over 840 students in Canada and developing/emerging countries. - At least 500 faculties from Canada and abroad were involved in the program. - Over 137,025 people were reached via the program’s public engagement activities (including via websites and newspaper articles) and over 3,720 in developing countries through international student interns’ knowledge-sharing activities when they returned. The 2010-2014 SFD program enhanced the capacity of Canadian and developing country students to engage in development and contributed to the Canadian public having a better understanding of international development issues. This is shown by responses to questionnaires completed by interns at the end of their internships: - 98% of Canadian students agreed (83% strongly) and 100% of international students agreed (89% strongly) that they had enhanced their ability to engage in development.
