Results achieved at the end of the project (September 2013): 1) The education component was instrumental in completing construction work in four schools (Carrefour, La Vallée de Jacmel, Terrier-Rouge and Miragoâne) including: i) restoring or building 19 classrooms and eight vocational training workshops; and ii) distributing educational material, computer equipment, furniture, tools and building supplies. About 800 elementary school students (including 380 girls) now benefit from improved learning environments, and at least 372 young adults (including 144 young women) were able to complete vocational training to become electricians, masons, plumbers, computer administrators or agricultural technicians. 2) The health component was instrumental in: i) building eight additional consultation rooms for Pétion-Ville’s health center with a daily capacity of 60 patients; ii) transforming an ancient building into a laboratory, including the provision of medical and administrative equipment; iii) distributing medical equipment that work on independent energy supplies (i.e. generators), water treatment systems and laboratory supplies for Labrousse’s health center. 3) The water component was instrumental in: i) rehabilitating two water aqueducts in Savanne-Henry and Labrousse, and building a third one in Labrousse, improving access to quality water for 8,250 individuals; ii) boring seven water wells providing quality water to 5,500 beneficiaries, making and distributing 800 water filters to improve water quality for 33,000 individuals, and repairing 102 manual water pumps for the benefit of 50,000 individuals; iii) training in rural hydraulics and manual water pump repair was provided to 24 individuals (including nine women), which resulted in the creation of three water filter fabrication micro-businesses, as well as a well pump repair micro-business. These results contributed to improving access to education, primary health and drinking water in the areas most affected by the earthquake, as well as improved living conditions for the people living in these areas, especially for children and youth.
