Description 

This project aims to improve the educational status of girls and boys in the Tama Ber, Adaa and Arsi Negele Districts in Ethiopia by achieving the following objectives: (1) increasing access to quality early childhood care and education and related health and nutrition services for young children; (2) improving the quality and efficiency of primary education for girls and boys; and (3) promoting equal access to early childhood care and primary education for girls, orphans and vulnerable children.

Expected results 

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: increased utilization of education and related health and nutrition services in assisted early childhood care and education (ECCE) centres among 4-6 year old girls and boys, Adaa, Arsi Negele and Tarma Ber Districts in Ethiopia; improved education performance of girls and boys in assisted primary schools, Adaa, Arsi Negele and Tarma Ber Districts in Ethiopia; and improved utilization of quality, equitable education services by girls, orphans and vulnerable children (f/m) in Adaa, Arsi Negele and Tarma Ber Districts in Ethiopia

Results achieved 

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2017) include: (1) the number of children aged between 4 and 6 enrolled in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programs has increased from 8.4% in 2012 to 50.5% in 2016; (2) the number of teachers using child-centered teaching methodologies has increased from 25.3% in 2012 to 90.5% in 2016; (3) the percentage of girls satisfied with the support received in the school environment has increased from 8.2% in 2012 to 98% in 2016; (4) 19 new ECCE centers were constructed, 76 ECCE centers were provided with equipment, furniture and materials. This has benefitted 15,896 children and 266 teachers; and (5) 200 Community Conversations sessions were facilitated on topics that impact children and their education. These sessions were attended by 58,113 people (of which 29,040 women and girls).
