Description

The Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp was destroyed during the 2007 conflict in Northern Lebanon, displacing 27,000 refugees. CIDA's contribution, along with that of other donors, helped the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) maintain its humanitarian assistance program for the Palestinian refugees displaced. Specifically, this project helped refugee families obtain food, water, shelter, education, health care services, temporary employment and other relief items and services. UNWRA also repaired and upgraded buildings and other infrastructure in the communities surrounding the camp. In addition, psychological and recreational services were provided for children and youth, to help mitigate the psychological effects of the conflict.

Results achieved

Results as of the end of the project include: Rental subsidies of up to US$200 a month were provided to more than 3,200 refugee families, helping them retain shelter. As well, more than 55,000 food parcels were delivered to more than 5,500 families. Grants were awarded to 195 small enterprises to enable them to restart business, and nearly 200 job seekers were placed in either employment or vocational training. In all, UNRWA’s efforts after the evacuation of Nahr el-Bared helped to prevent malnutrition and outbreaks of communicable diseases during the project implementation period, and ensure that more than 25,000 refugees had improved access to food, safe water, accommodation, and education and health services.
