Project profile — Quick Agricultural and Livelihood Recovery - West Bank and Gaza - UN Consolidated Appeal 2009

Implemented by CARE, this project has supported food security and livelihood recovery for small-scale farmers and conflict-affected households in Gaza. CIDA’s contribution has allowed small-scale farmers affected by the recent conflict to quickly restart agricultural production by rehabilitating destroyed agricultural fields and equipment and replanting crops. The project has also contributed to improving food security by buying fresh food baskets from local farmers and distributing them to local households in need. This project is one of over 300 projects that made up the United Nations' 2009 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for the West Bank and Gaza. The 2009 CAP, worth over US$876 million, has allowed the international community to help spare Palestinians from the worst effects of the ongoing crisis by delivering humanitarian assistance, increasing the protection of civilians, improving the collection of humanitarian information, and strengthening the United Nations' humanitarian coordination structure. Overall, through this appeal, non-governmental organisations and the United Nations have helped restore human dignity and alleviate further poverty, institutional weakness, and instability in the West Bank and Gaza.

Results achieved as of the end of the project include: About 1,000 farmers have improved their productivity after receiving nets, compost, seeds and seedlings and by planting more than 240 hectares of agricultural land; 3,725 households received fresh food baskets for at least 24 weeks; 507 men and women benefited from temporary paid employment opportunities; 700 farmers earned income from part of their vegetable production; and 327 farmers benefited from 8.25 kilometres of rehabilitated agricultural roads. These have contributed to the improvement of the food security and livelihoods of vulnerable Palestinians in conflict-affected areas of Gaza.
