Project profile — Assistance to Small Farmers - West Bank and Gaza - UN Consolidated Appeal 2011

The project aims to strengthen the food security of small-scale farmers and households by helping them to increase food production and incomes. Through the project, small-scale farmers are rehabilitating damaged farmland and planting new crops, while livestock breeders are improving animal health and productivity. The project also targets female-headed households to receive business training and the necessary start-up materials to produce and sell honey. This project is one of over 200 projects that make up the United Nations' 2011 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for the West Bank and Gaza. The 2011 CAP, worth over US$575 million, allows the international community to help spare Palestinians from the worst effects of the ongoing crisis by delivering humanitarian assistance, increasing the protection of civilians, improving the collection of humanitarian information, and strengthening the United Nations' humanitarian coordination structure. Overall, through this appeal, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations help restore human dignity and alleviate further poverty, institutional weakness, and instability in the West Bank and Gaza.

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (i) 500 smallholder farmers received inputs, such as organic fertilizer and irrigation systems, as well as training to plant crops on rehabilitated agricultural land and to improve their farm management skills; (ii) food-insecure households received 1,050 beehives and beekeeping equipment; and (iii) 800 livestock breeders received veterinary services. These results have contributed to improving the food security, or access to safe, sufficient and nutritious foods, of 2,100 vulnerable households.
