Project profile — Food Aid - Gaza - UN Consolidated Appeal 2012

This is one of the projects that make up the United Nations' 2012 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for the West Bank and Gaza. The initiative aims to help the World Food Program (WFP) address food insecurity and improve dietary diversity for poor and vulnerable non-refugees in Gaza. Activities include: distributing emergency food assistance and food vouchers to about 285,000 food-insecure non-refugees, including 165,000 children and 59,525 women; and providing school feeding for 80,000 non-refugee children in targeted areas.

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: improved food security, enhanced food consumption and improved dietary diversity for the targeted, non-refugee population in Gaza. This will be achieved through delivery of food assistance to about 285,000 food-insecure Palestinians, including 165,000 children and 59,525 women; and implementing school feeding for 80,000 children in targeted areas.

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (i) 49,000 metric tons of food commodities were distributed to more than 320,000 non-refugees; (ii) 69,600 children under the age of five were helped through institutional feeding programs; (iii) 69,840 women and 63,052 men were given food vouchers or provided with food (90 percent of which was fortified to improve nutritional value). These results have contributed to meeting the immediate food needs of the most vulnerable and food-insecure non-refugees in Gaza.
