Project profile — Food Aid - West Bank - UN Consolidated Appeal 2012

This is one of the projects that make up the United Nations’ 2012 Consolidated Appeal Process for the West Bank and Gaza. The initiative aims to help the World Food Program (WFP) address food insecurity and improve dietary diversity for poor and vulnerable non-refugees in the West Bank. The project also helps improve government capacity to monitor and predict food insecurity. Activities include: (i) distributing emergency food assistance and food vouchers to 263,000 beneficiaries in vulnerable households to promote dietary diversity and support the local economy; (ii), supporting herder and Bedouin communities of the West Bank; and (iii) ongoing implementation of the Food Security and Monitoring System in cooperation with the Palestinian Central Bureau for Statistics.

The expected intermediate outcome for this project is improved food security; enhanced food consumption and improved dietary diversity of the targeted, non-refugee population in the West Bank. Approximately 263,000 beneficiaries will be targeted through vouchers and food assistance and 30,000 Bedouins will be targeted in Area C. WFP will also continue to provide regular Socio Economic and Food Security survey reports, implemented jointly with FAO and UNRWA, through the Palestinian Central Bureau for Statistics (PCBS).

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (i) 113,000 metric tons of food were distributed to more than 325,000 non-refugee Palestinians in the West Bank; (ii) 69,000 children under the age of five were helped through institutional feeding programs; (iii) 62,469 women and 61,548 men were given food vouchers or were provided with food; and (iv) food assistance was provided to food-insecure and vulnerable Bedouin communities in Israeli-controlled parts of the West Bank. These results have contributed to meeting the immediate food needs of the most vulnerable and food-insecure non-refugees in the West Bank.
