Description and results

Description

This project is part of Canada’s Women’s Voice and Leadership Program, which supports local and regional women’s organisations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights, and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting activities, building institutional capacity, and promoting network and alliance-building as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change. The Program also responds to the globally recognized, significant gap in funding and support to women’s rights organizations and movements around the world. This project is implemented by Oxfam-Québec and supports women's rights organizations in Tunisia. It's objective is to strengthen the capacity of local women's rights organizations across the country. It also aims to support their activities that seek to: (1) empower women and girls; (2) preserve their rights; and (3) achieve gender equality in their society. More than 130 organizations and institutions are supported by this project. The project directly involves more than 15,000 people, at least 60% of whom are women. In addition, the project works with 500 women and youth to strengthen their leadership skills and capacities to promote women's rights. The project aims to reach at least 30% of young people aged between 15 and 30 years of the Tunisian population, through the organizations supported and the activities implemented by this project.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved management and sustainability of [local or regional] women’s rights organizations in Tunisia; (2) enhanced performance of women’s rights organizations’ programming and advocacy to advance gender equality and empower women and girls; and (3) increased effectiveness of sub-national and national (or regional) women’s rights platforms, networks and alliances to affect policy, legal and social change in Tunisia.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) assisted ten women's rights organizations (WROs) to start their programmatic activities. They learned how to conduct a self-diagnosis using a methodology tailored to their organization and develop a capacity building plan; (2) held a learning and networking workshop for WROs. The event allowed them to present the status of their respective projects. In addition, the event allowed them to talk about the challenges they have faced since the start-up. Finally, they were able to exchange on their capacity building plans, with a view to setting up a governance mechanism for the collective management of capacity building strategies; (3) organized a session facilitated by Global Psychologists to open a dialogue on the challenges and stigmatization faced by most of the active members of WROs; and (4) supported three initiatives within the framework of the Responsive Fund to implement mobilization actions aimed at defending, protecting and realizing women's rights.
